Hyundai Motor Company is a South Korean automible company that is part of the Korean Hyundai/Kia Automotive Group. Located in Seoul, South Korea, Hyundai is the forth largest company to sell cars in Eastern Asia. Toyota, Honda, Nissan. and Hyundai and the four most powerful and influential car companies. Hyundai facotories are capable of making around 1.6 million units per year.
Hyundai's logo is suppose to simbolize a shake of hands between the customer and the company. Also, Translation of the Korean word Hyundai is modernity.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company was the first name the company ever had. Founded by Chung Ju-Yung in 1947. The company’s first model, the Cortina, was released in 1968 with the cooperation of American company Ford Motor. Soon, in 1975, Hyundai's Pony model was released with an extraodinary interior designed by Italian Desinger Guiorgio Giugiaro. Technology wise, the Pony was fairly updated due to the input Mitsubishi Motors provided.
In 1986, Hyundai started selling cars in the United States. One of their brands, The Excel won awards, due to its afrfordability. In 1988, they started making new models, one of them was the Sonata.
In the year 1999, after several years leading the company, Chung Ju Yung gave his son, Chung Mong Koo full leadership of the company. Hyundai’s parent company, Hyundai Motor Group decided to invest in creating quality designes. They also decided to add a 10 year or 100,000 mile warranty to Hyundai vehicles in the United States. They were very adamant on creating a strong marketing campaing for a better over all revenue.
In 2006, the South Korean government initiated an investigation on Chung Mong Koo's practices as head of Hyundai, because they suspecting him of corruption. On April 28, 2006, Chung was arrested, and charged for embezzlement of 100 billion won (US$106 million). Hyundai Vice Chairman and CEO, Kim Dong-jin, took over as head of the company.
As of now, Hyundai is one of the top 100 most valuable brands worldwide.
